I've worked in the library field for 22 years in multiple positions. I'm passionate about library technology, circulation methodology, and patron service.
Oversee operations of the daily business software for the Library District. Provide project management for ILS upgrades and library automation. Implemented Polaris Leap. Design and deliver training online, in-person, and one-on-one. Gather information through SQL and build reports for staff access. Regularly work at multiple libraries and provide excellent patron service. Provide ILS information and support to multiple libraries in the County.
Created, curated, and populated content to the library’s website, powered by a heavily customised Polaris PowerPAC, along with social media and digital signage. Created tools and methods to streamline workflow and provide efficient staff service to promote events, programmes, and initiatives. Deployed and managed browser based software for meeting room scheduling, events management, and staff intranet. Designed and taught staff and public classes on library technology, eReaders, downloadable content, and online streaming services. Provided ILS support to staff, public, and other local libraries.
Managed the operations of the Circulation Department in the first and third busiest libraries in the Library District. Interviewed and recommended for hire positions ranging from part time Pages to full time Librarians. Provided evaluations and reviews for full and part time staff. On-site troubleshooting of library automation technology such as self-check machines and sorting systems. Assisted patrons with materials and account concerns, locating materials, reader’s advisory, reference, and technology questions. Participated in and helped design multiple library events and programmes from musical story times to summer reading events.
Outside of my library work, I'm a digital creative. I make podcasts about technology and libraries (Cyberpunk Librarian), and I have a sci-fi story based show featuring librarians in space (Intragalactic Librarian). Besides that, I listen to far more podcasts than anyone should. I've written four books on subjects ranging from popular history to library tech to cyberpunk culture to the paranormal.
I love music and listen to almost everything, but I have a special adoration for ambient and space music, along with the folk music of Ireland and Quebec. My favourite ambient musician is Lucette Bourdin, I love Gaelic Storm and The Dubliners, and Le Vent du Nord is the best folk band to ever emerge from Quebec. I occasionally compose, cover, and record my own music and I'll sing Irish folk whenever I don't think anyone is paying attention.
