Daniel Messer – I worked at MCLD when you did and only met you briefly so I doubt you remember me. I enjoy your thoughts and have just finished listening to Episode 65 of Cyberpunk Librarian. I loved it, however, at minute 19, I realized I should have continued taking cataloging or techie classes because as you spoke it all became Greek to me. I hung on and rallied when you introduced Calibre to create a 3rd party online catalog that does not offer digital downloads.
I took a course that I loved at U of AZ where I created a virtual hard drive and then a database with open-source software. Since graduating in 2012 I have yet to worm my way into any sort of library cataloging work as sort of retired 2 weeks ago today!
I still want to work but in the meantime, I have decided to work on a database cataloging postage stamps. I have been a philatelist for over 57 years. About 10 years ago I decided to gather up and sell all world postage stamps in my possession except for the USA stamps. Interestingly enough many of these world postage stamps are from locations that are no longer countries; having been renamed and reallocated after political upheaval. I have yet to find a decent open-source program for this purpose. Any suggestions?
